Tips for Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)
- The feet of people with RA are considered to be ‘High Risk’ for three main reasons.
- The skin becomes atrophied (thinner) over time, making it more likely to be compromised by pressure and friction, cuts, infections and ulceration. Some people with RA take steroids, which also cause thinning of the skin over time.
- There are two types of vasculitis (inflammation of blood vessels) in RA that cause a reduction of blood supply to the tissue of the feet, causing poor tissue viability and slow healing.
- Joint deformities in the feet cause high-pressure points that can also lead to ulceration.
- Properly fitting shoes are absolutely essential in RA (see the section on Tips for Shoes above).
- The daily inspection of your feet (see Tips for Diabetes) is equally important.
